After high school George worked a few odd jobs in the Dallas area. In May of '67, he went to San Diego for Navy boot camp. After boot camp George was stationed in Yokosuka, Japan. In November, 1969, he was given an eighteen month early out. He married while in Japan and had a son in October of '69.
George and his family returned to Dallas and started their post military life, where he went to work for Texas Industries Inc. as a truck driver in August, 1970. Ten years and three more children later (only one lived) George and his wife were divorced. He married Betty, his current wife in September, 1978. Betty had two children. George and Betty do not have any children together. George rose through the ranks at TXI to become the head of five truck bases and shops. In October, 1986, he left TXI and joined Chaparral Truckload, L.L.C., where he became Vice President / General Manager and 20% owner. With the retirement of the principle owner, George left Chaparral in December, 2003, and a month later joined FedEx as a driver where he no longer has the headaches of management responsibility. "I am currently driving a tractor trailer and running a daily Dallas route. I love it! No management decisions. It is a pleasure to just worry about me after 30 years of management." "My hobbies include collecting old music, rebuilding old cars (street rods), and most recently rebuilding old motorcycles. I have chopped a 76' Harley to bring to the next reunion (if I can hold it up)." It took George only three years to build the machine of his dreams. You can contact George via e-mail at Texlrb@aol.com. He would enjoy hearing from his classmates and old friends from Oak Cliff. |
