"I spent just a few weeks at Eastern Hills High in Fort Worth, before my folks sold our house and moved to Oak Cliff. My days at KHS were great and part of that was due to getting out at noon for a year or so and working as part of the Distributive
Education Program under Jay Todes, who taught that class. I spent 29 days in Methodist Hospital as a result of my motor scooter crash in '64. The old blue Allstate Cruisaire was smashed pretty good. 30 more days in bed at home and 30 more
on crutches, but today, I am fine.
"I remember our all night graduation party at SMU and when it was over, I headed out to Abilene to Abilene Christian and began Summer school the next day. That is where I started my radio career at KRBC. They had hired a DJ named Bobby Dark and on his first night, he got drunk and was fired and a couple of days later....I was Bobby Dark! I received a Bachelor's in Criminal Justice and a Master's in Human Relations and Management from ACU and spent a number of years at KBOX in Dallas. I spent some time in Louisville, New York and Chicago before heading back to KBOX and finished my radio days in 1982. "The radio job helped me get my foot in the door at Lorimar productions and for several years, I did bit parts and extra work on the TV series DALLAS. I also had parts in a number of movies, including DEADLY BLESSINGS, which was Sharon Stone's first movie. I still get residual checks for those movies. The last one was for DEADLY BLESSINGS on Japanese Pay TV and was for the whopping amount of $.04. Yes, four cents. "In 1983, I was hired by American Airlines to instruct in their Reservations office and eventually went to DFW to work as an agent and Passenger Service Manager. I retired from AA in 1997. Now, I am a 911 dispatcher for the Tarrant County Sheriff's Office. "While at AA, I fell in love with a student of mine named Debbie and we were married in 1988 in the tiny village of Engelberg, in the Swiss Alps an hour from Lucerne. We have been lucky enough, as a result of working for AA, to see much of the world. Our world is so wonderful in so many ways. I stood on top of the Berlin wall just before it came down and in a one year, we visited Malaysia, Borneo, Brunei, China, Hong Kong, Viet Nam and Russia. Most beautiful country--New Zealand. Most romantic city -- Rio or Sidney. Best US city--New York. Best International city--London and Hong Kong. But, like so many say, the United States has so much to offer......the majesty of Alaska, the beaches of Hawaii, the beauty of Montana, Washington, Oregon, Maine and the Great Lakes. Of course, I am still in Arlington........ "Debbie and I have been blessed with two daughters, Carlea is 13 and Andie is 10. We married a little later in life and I am loving being a Dad and trying to keep up from the comfort and safety of my Hover Round.........only kidding ! "I want to say thank you to all those like Marc for the work on the KHS-'66 website. It is nice to see and hear about old friends." |
